Non-Random Notes: Shriver Coast To Coast, Clintons Kill Negative Story, Hillary On Hyperpartisanship, Schwarzenegger's UN Address, Schwarzenegger To Sign Iran Divestment, And More
As Honorary Chair of California’s Family Day, First Lady Maria Shriver will join students and their families at Tenderloin Community School and participate in activities that encourage families to spend time together - from eating healthy meals, to participating in fun physical activities, volunteering as a family and creating family disaster plans, these activities encourage families to Eat, Play, Serve and Prepare together. The event will celebrate Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children, a national movement that reminds parents about the importance of parental engagement in their children’s lives and encourages parents to have frequent family dinners with their kids as an effective way to prevent substance abuse.
I’m sure that readers have gathered I admire the Clintons, with whom I’ve been distantly acquainted, and think they are highly professional, not to mention intriguing characters. Without being terribly motivated to drive more than the distance to the grocery store to see the current candidate herself, though I may well vote for her. She says a few things that are simply, and shockingly, wrong — can anyone say “nuclear deterrence?” — and gets away with it because the press is increasingly intellectually depleted and/or reflexively for her. But that’s the way it goes. The truth is that none of these candidates are exactly paragons. There are one or two who might be. And about them, we will see. Because, as the saying goes, the night is young.
“Well, Chris, if you had walked even a day in our shoes over the last 15 years, I’m sure you’d understand. But you know, the real goal for our country right now is to get beyond partisanship, and I’m sure trying to do my part, because we’ve got a lot of serious problems that we’re trying to deal with.”
Mr. Secretary, Mr. President, distinguished delegates, ladies and gentlemen, I’ve come to feel great affection for the peoples of the world, because they’ve always been so welcoming to me, if it is as the bodybuilding champion, or as a movie star, private citizen, or as the governor of the great State of California. And you, their delegates, have also made me feel very welcome here this morning. So I want to thank you for this great honor, for having me here. I also want to thank my wife and my partner, the First Lady of California, Maria Shriver, who is here today with me. Give her a big hand, right over there she is.
** SCHWARZENEGGER SAYS HE WILL SIGN IRAN DIVESTMENT LEGISLATION. Says Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger: “California has a long history of leadership and doing what’s right with our investment portfolio. Last year, I was proud to sign legislation to divest from the Sudan to take a powerful stand against genocide. I look forward to signing legislation to divest from Iran to take an equally powerful stand against terrorism.”
“The time has come to stop looking back at the Kyoto Protocol,” Schwarzenegger will say. “The consequences of global climate change are so pressing it doesn’t matter who was responsible for the past. What matters is who is answerable for the future. And that means all of us. … California is moving the United States beyond debate and doubt to action.” Former Vice President Al Gore also addresses the UN today. This kicks off a big week for the issue, with the UN meeting early in the week, to help set the table for a global summit later this year in Bali. And a meeting hosted later in the week by President George W. Bush, of selected emitters of greenhouse gases. Also on tap is the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, hosted in New York by the former president, coinciding with the UN General Assembly. Climate change will figure prominently there, as well. Pressured by a host of factors, including Schwarzenegger, Bush’s administration at last acknowledges that the greenhouse effect is real and that it is causing climate change. They just want to take a voluntary approach toward dealing with it. Don’t expect that to stand up too well this week.
According to Amnesty International, there are approximately 4.2 million displaced Iraqis, 2.2 million of whom are within Iraq. The vast majority of the rest are in Syria and Jordan. This is reported to be the biggest population movement in the Middle East since 1948, when the creation of Israel led to the displacement of Palestinians.
Your posts are welcome in the Forum. Comments (67)Jonas Blane :Ann :Will Schwarzeneger be late again? lol Bill Bradley :He's in New York. I believe he's letting the secretary-general of the UN speak first. sergei :This is important UN meeting. I wish Russia played lead role. Ann :Who was the scientist who just stopped talking. Doctor what? Bill Bradley :Don't you mean Doctor Who? Ann :Ooh, it's our Governor! OH MY GAWD! Capitol Boy :I thought he did very well. Ann :He speaks a lot better English than the Mayor of New Delhi. Bill Bradley :Be nice. Ann :He was good. No, really. Honest. Wilbur :MSM seem to be totally ignoring the UN meeting. For them the only newsworthy furriner in New York is Iranian. I turned on my TV, flipped thru the news shows, and all I found was an assortment of American demagogues bloviating about an Iranian demagogue and how dare those commies at Columbia actually let him -gasp - speak! Bill Bradley :Cable news has become such a disappointment. They have a 24-hour newshole. It could and should be a rich mosaic of stories and ideas. Instead, it's like a little kids soccer game. Everybody runs to the one ball that's right in front of them. Somebody kicks it, and they all run after it. Capitol Boy :Aren't they ready to do O.J. all the time again? That's what I want to see. Whatever happened to Phil Spector sticking the gun in the over-the-hill actress's mouth and pulling the trigger? Why aren't they all over that? Bill Bradley :Well, Phil Spector -- the "Wall of Sound" music producer -- is a name from the '60s. And not a superstar name. And Lana Clarkson was a 40something actress reduced to hostessing at the House of Blues or the Hard Rock Cafe or wherever she was. I think the story has a lot of pathos. With a film noir hook. But it's a story that requires talent to develop, since the principals are not obvious contemporary stars. And this kind of journalism is now a little kids soccer game ... Sam Loomis :Someone should ask Ahmadinejad what he's doing about climate change. Bill Bradley :He's probably planning to eliminate your carbon footprint. Bill Bradley :Not that his bosses would allow him to actually do anything ... Johnnie Rico :What is more awesome? Mila Jovovich in RESIDENT EVIL or the return of HEROES? richard locicero :Meanwhile they can't let go. Oh the scandal! The NYT didn't charge MoveOn enough for their ad. Probably an Iranian plot! I hear Bush is going to have his own conference on Global Warming. Gee, that ought to be fun! Bill Bradley :Ah, the $80K scandal ... I wrote about the Bush climate change conference in the Monday Morning Quarterback. Global warming is real, says the prez. But action should be voluntary. Bill Bradley :Oh, the answer is clear. It's the fabulous MILLA. >Johnnie Rico : Bill Bradley :It wasn't quite a year ago. I remember how exhausted I was -- you can hear me clearing my throat on the soundtrack -- and on the cusp of getting sick I was. Which happened as a result of covering something later that night I should have said no to. >Jonas Blane : Barbara :C-SPaN 3 IS JUST STARTING COLUMBIA UNIV.FORUM WITH pRESIDENT a. OF IRAN Capitol Boy :I don't get C-SPAN 3. For a mediahyped speech it's not out there. Ann :What are the 3 top universities in the world Schwarzeneger is talking about? Ann :What are the other 3 (non-California) universities? Bill Bradley :Harvard, Cambridge, and MIT. Bill Bradley :Schwarzenegger mentions that three of the top six universities in the world, according to The Economist, are in California. They are Stanford, UC Berkeley, and CalTech. >Ann : Bill Bradley :Incidentally, the rankings include 10 California universities among the top 50 in the world. The other seven are: UCLA, UC San Diego, UC San Francisco, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, UC Irvine, and USC. carole w :Re: Hillary on Fox Jonas Blane :Who is the woman in the red suit silhoueted against the skyline at the end of the video? Is that Mayor Newsom at the very end saying "Oh man I like that!"? Hap Hazard :I am amazed at the free ride Clinton gets on Mainstream media, even Fox. Nobody took apart the Hsu fundraising issue, and no mainstream media organization has devoted many resources to discover the details about this issue. I think Hillary was safe to assume, as I am sure she did, that this will not be looked into by the FEC until after the presidential election, and never at all by the media. Bill Bradley :Well, if Hillary isn't the MSM candidate for president, I'm very much mistaken. As regards Fox, there is some reason to believe that Rupert Murdoch likes Hillary. Bill Bradley :A little too perfect, perhaps? BTW, Las Vegas starts up again Friday night, this time with Tom Selleck. >carole w : Bill Bradley :The woman in red silhouetted against the San Francisco skyline -- a favorite shot across the Bay, as we were on Treasure Island at the time -- is Schwarzenegger chief of staff Susan Kennedy. She's talking on her cell and fixing to pull the governor out of there. The guy rushing past at the very end burbling about how much he likes it is that great character, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. >Jonas Blane : Capitol Boy :The ever-controlling Susan Kennedy. Is she going to get deals on health and water? Bill Bradley :Schwarzenegger should get a deal on health care. He should also get a deal on water, but we'll see how much ideology gets in the Democrats' way of acknowleding the painfully obvious about the future. Brasky :AP Reports: "A federal judge sentenced Hollywood director John McTiernan to four months in prison Monday after refusing to allow him to withdraw his guilty plea to charges of lying to the FBI about his association with disgraced private eye Anthony Pellicano." McTiernan directed Predator, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October and The Thomas Crown Affair. Bill Bradley :That's sad, especially since we all use investigators/investigative capability, in one way or another. I have to confess I haven't followed the Pellicano case aside from determining it doesn't impact any friends of mine. McTiernan is an exceptionally good director. I'm actually watching one of his films right now. Although I'm having some trouble getting through it, because the leading lady is quite annoying. Bill Bradley :... Incidentally, John McTiernan directed the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, not the original. The remake, which is good, stars Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. The original, directed by Norman Jewison, stars Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. The score of the original film, composed by Michel Legrand, frequently plays in my car. Ann :"we all use investigators/investigative capability, in one way or another." We do? Brasky :I just watched the original. It was a little too slow paced for me, but I liked the actual heist. Haven't seen the remake. Bill Bradley :Movies had a different pacing then. It's so cool. The score is classic. McQueen is classic. Faye Dunaway is super-cool in all her outfits. Brasky :From the same period, I like 3 Days of the Condor – it’s slow paced, but the suspense carries the lulls. I'm trying to think of a good heist picture from that time to compare it too. The only one I can think of is Kelly's Heroes. Awesome flick, but not really the same genre. Bill Bradley :That's only slow compared to today's ADD pictures. Sacramento Solon :Brasky :A long way from the Bourne series. Brasky :Don't know the North Siders. Sacramento Solon :Brasky : The little bears that like to play within the friendly confines of ivy covered walls. Capitol Boy :Bears. Bourne, what? wilbur :"AB 221 by Assemblymember Joel Anderson (R- La Mesa) creates the California Public Divestment from Iran Act. This will prevent the state’s two massive public employee retirement funds from investing in a company with business operations in Iran." That includes Halliburton, then, right? carole w :Wilbur, Bill, Sacramento Solon :carole w :Todays video is a perfect message for the future generations of California. Ann :You see how whack the Flush Report was today? lol Auros :I'll be interested to see what actual action comes out of the UN conference on climate... This past Saturday was an intensely Jerry-Brown-inflected day in my Principles of Sustainable Management class, with talks from You should meet Chuck and Carol some time, if you haven't. Interesting characters -- whip-smart, but self-deprecating. Bill Bradley :I'm too busy. Bill Bradley :It's an evergreen, that's for sure ... :) >carole w : Bill Bradley :Congratulations! I will. Like I need a big excuse ... >carole w : Bill Bradley :What's Halliburton doing in Iran? >wilbur : Bill Bradley :That's true. >Brasky : Wilbur :In 2005 it came out that they were building natural gas facilities in Iran and also murmured they were transferring nuclear technology to them as well. The broke the work off to foreign subsidiaries at the time, which got around whatever friendly state department restrictions existed. One subsidiary supposedly finished work a fw months ago; the other, KBR which just quit being subsidiary Brown and Root in April 2007 (a buyout and doubtless lingering payments relationship which would be fun to peel apart) is still there doing warranty work on its Iranian project. I suspect that if one worked very hard they would still find cash and value flowing to Halliburton, who handed the work, from the subsidiaries and proxies now wrapping it up. Certainly if they were Hillary's companies there would have been a grand jury by now. I guess the axis of evil has money to spend, so why shouldn't Dick Cheney's buddies scoop it up? Bill Bradley :That is very interesting. Jonas Blane :Video today? Bill Bradley :Why, yes. Bill Bradley :Incidentally, NWN passed 40,000 comments sometime in the last week. Comments have been archived for this page. |
